Report Introduction: What is happening in the Middle East right now?

As the situation in the Middle East has become increasingly tense since October 2023, its future is attracting more and more attention. The Middle East Flash Report tells you "what's happening right now" in the Middle East region.

For example, in the second half of May, President Biden announced a ceasefire plan at the end of May for a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist organization Hamas, but the two sides remain at odds. In addition, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an order for provisional measures, including an immediate halt to attacks on Rafah in the southernmost part of Gaza and the opening of the Rafah checkpoint, and the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) requested arrest warrants for both sides. Although the international community is taking action, the future remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Spain, Norway, and Ireland formally recognized Palestine as a state in late May. This could lead to more European countries recognizing the state. Although the United States and some other countries have yet to recognize it, more than 140 countries have already recognized Palestine as a state, so while this cannot be said to be a major global movement, the international community's stance on the situation in the Middle East is changing.

Keeping an eye on China's movements

China's actions in the Middle East are also attracting attention. The China-Arab Countries Cooperation Forum was held at the end of May. China is also increasing its presence on the political sphere, such as by acting as a mediator in the normalization of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March 2023. What role China will play in the Middle East, both politically and economically, is becoming increasingly important in business.

As you can see, the Middle East, including Iran, Iraq, and Libya, is changing every day. It is becoming increasingly important to keep up with the political and economic situation in the region in order to continue business activities. (MS, Economic Affairs Department)
